Pit Boss controller setting

Pit Boss P-Setting: what it changes and when to leave it alone

The P-Setting is not a universal temperature control. It applies only when your exact Pit Boss controller documents it, and only in Smoke mode.

What the P-Setting controls

Pit Boss describes the setting as changing the auger pause time while the cooker is in Smoke mode. It does not change temperature behavior at every other setpoint. The manufacturer’s default is P-4 and it says that is the appropriate setting in most situations.

Higher P number

Longer auger pause

In Smoke mode, this can lower the temperature and increase smoldering. It can also make a flame-out more likely if raised too far.

Lower P number

Shorter auger pause

In Smoke mode, this can raise the temperature and reduce swings. It is not a substitute for a clean fuel and airflow path.

Any other setpoint

Do not expect a P-Setting change

Pit Boss says the setting has no impact outside Smoke mode. Diagnose an ordinary temperature issue through the actual symptom instead.

When not to adjust it

A poor start, weak heat, unusual smoke, ash buildup, a feed problem, or a controller alert is not automatically a P-Setting problem. Treat the visible symptom first. A setting cannot make wet pellets, a blocked air path, a damaged component, or a failed ignition safe.

Use this decision rule

  1. Confirm that the exact controller has a P-Setting and that the cooker is actually in Smoke mode.
  2. Keep the documented default unless a model-specific manual gives a reason to change it.
  3. Stop and use a flame-out or overflow path if the fire goes out, pellets build up, or heat becomes abnormal.
