Winterize a pellet grill before storage
Prepare the cooker, fuel system, grease path, and exterior for a winter pause without creating a damp-fuel or first-start problem.
Maintenance rhythm
- At the final cook before storage: let the documented shutdown cycle complete and do not interrupt it merely to cover the cooker sooner.
- Once fully cold: clean ash, grease, grates, and the accessible fuel path using the exact model’s maintenance instructions.
- Before covering: empty or protect pellets based on the manual and local humidity, check for water entry points, and make sure the grease collection area is empty.
- At spring restart: inspect the cord, hopper, fire pot, grease system, and seating of internal components, then use a normal documented startup rather than improvising a test fire.
Winter storage starts with the last shutdown
Note whether pellets remain in the hopper, whether the grease collector was emptied, and where water can reach the cover or cooker. A clean exterior is not the whole preparation; fuel condition and trapped grease determine how predictable spring startup will be.
Safe sequence
- Let the final shutdown cycle complete, then wait for a fully cold cooker before covering or cleaning it.
- Clear cold ash, grease, and any fuel the exact manual says should not remain exposed during storage.
- Keep the grease collector empty and protect the cooker from standing moisture without storing flammable material in or under it.
- When the cooker comes back out, inspect it before loading fresh pellets and use the normal documented startup sequence.
How to use the sources
The sources support storage only after a full cool-down and the documented cold cleanout. They do not make a cover a substitute for dry fuel, a clear grease path, or an inspection at the next startup.
What this path actually requires
- Exact model manual
- Shop vacuum rated for cool ash
- Non-metal cleaning cloth or brush
- Flashlight
